The Southern border of the KwaZulu Natal South Coast is only the beginning of an ultimate adventure...
Port Edward, the place of unexpected pleasure, is the last stop on the South Coast. It is ideally situated on the banks of the Umtamvuna River lagoon, and is surrounded by the ruggedly beautiful Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, lush banana plantations and sugar cane farms, and the rather unusual ‘red’ desert. Dozens of B&Bs, restaurants, craft shops and galleries are dotted around this fascinating little town.
Take a leisurely drive to the Old Pont on the river, or go for an energetic hike in the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, which contains many rare plants and is home to a colony of vultures. There are 4x4 trails and mountain bike tracks, or try a leisurely boat trip up the Umtamvuna lagoon.
Port Edward’s beaches provide excellent swimming, and include a popular skiboat launch. This is a famous fishing destination, both deep sea and off the rocks. Immediately across the river is the Wild Coast Casino, and the award winning Wild Coast golf course. Here the beaches stretch forever into a wild and untamed land. |
